Historical Markers

The Mid-Ohio Valley region is incredibly rich in American history and played a pivotal role in the Civil War due to our location on the border between Ohio and Virginia, and, our position at the intersection of the vital communications and transportation arteries posed by the B&O Railroad and Ohio River.  Large numbers of volunteers were recruited and trained in the region and fought in many of the major battle campaigns of the war, including First Bull Run, South Mountain, Antietam, Second Bull Run, Shiloh, Corinth, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Vicksburg, Chickamauga, Missionary Ridge, Wilderness, Atlanta, Petersburg, Appomattox and many more.  It is important to tell the stories of those from the region who served and sacrificed in order to ensure that their names and accomplishments are not lost or forgotten.
